The number of COVID-19 infected countries had also tripled. WHO announced on 11 March 2020 that COVID-19 could be identified as a Pandemic. Pakistan announced its first two COVID-19 patients on 27th February 2020. The first two reports were of people who had recently moved from Iran back to Pakistan.
Pakistani Government’s Response to COVID-19
There are plenty of steps being taken by the Pakistani government to monitor the outbreak and help their people in the fight against the COVID-19.
China, COVID-19 epicenter, lies northeast of Pakistan. Also, Pakistan shares its south-western boundary with Iran, where the number of cases and deaths is rapidly increasing. In addition to the declaration of COVID-19 as a pandemic by the WHO, the geographical locations of extremely severe outbreaks in two countries bordering Pakistan (China and Iran) forced Pakistan’s government to take drastic, severe, and swift action to stop further transmission of the virus in the country. The federal government of Pakistan, in cooperation with the Ministry of Health, established a program called “Corona Virus Disease National Action Plan (COVID-19) Pakistan.”
Pakistan’s Successful Attempts to Break the Transmission Chain
This program aimed to formulate policies and a blueprint to help the provincial and state governments across Pakistan to establish methods and strategies to best deal with the COVID-19 outbreak. Provincial governments developed quarantine centers using this guidance. Many hospitals have had isolation wards built by the government. The Ministry of Health has also managed to provide critical supplies for the fight against this disease, such as face masks, gloves, and protective suits to protect paramedics and doctors at the frontlines of this pandemic. Throughout the nation’s mainstream media and social media networks, initiatives were launched to raise awareness among the general public about proper hand sanitization methods and the value of social distancing to break the transmission chain.
WHO Praises Pakistan’s Response against Corona virus
Chief of the World Health Organization Dr. Tedros Adhanom has appreciated the response of the Pakistani government to coronavirus, terming Pakistan’s coronavirus (Covid-19) steps as “timely and the best national response.”
Pakistan’s smart lockdown strategy acknowledged by Bill Gates
Bill Gates admits attempts by the nation to combat the pandemic. He acknowledged the Pakistan government’s smart lockdown policy in a telephone conversation with Pakistan’s Prime Minister Imran Khan, claiming it has performed well against the coronavirus.
“The rate of COVID-19 victims in Karachi has been alarming, but now there is a situation like in Europe and the number of victims has decreased, but I am sorry to say that India still has a situation like South America,” said Bill Gates.
The strategy not only further prevented the spread of the virus, but also protected the livelihoods of hundreds and thousands of Pakistan’s poor people, said Bill, the co-chair of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.
UNGA Prime Minister-elect Termed Pakistan’s Covid-19 strategy “a good example” for the world
President-elect Volkan Bozkir of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) has termed Pakistan’s strategy against Covid-19 a “good example” for the world to pursue.
“Pakistan is a good example for the world with its policies linked to the pandemic. Figures show that Pakistan has done better than other countries in the world, and I’m happy to see it with my own eyes,” said the President-elect.
Current Situation Regarding the Pandemic
Pakistan’s coronavirus recovery rate on Sunday reached 91 percent with official statistics showing that 260,248 patients have recovered from the disease so far, compared to the overall number of 284,121 confirmed cases since the outbreak.
The federal government has agreed to allow the reopening of restaurants, cinemas, beauty parlors, fitness centers, and other businesses from Monday.
The world widely appreciates the smart lockdown policy of Prime Minister Imran Khan, concentrating primarily on the balance between life and survival, as the country has seen a dramatic decline in cases involving viruses.
In a study, London’s Imperial College ranked Pakistan fourth in terms of person-to-person coronavirus transmission, based on data from July 20. Pakistan has reached a rate of 0.73, keeping in mind that country rating below 1 is considered the best for their efforts against COVID.
